How do I make website automations reliable?
A reliable automation must know whether a request is authentic, whether it has already been processed and whether the intended action actually completed. Connecting two tools is only the start. Plan duplicates, delays and failure before sending real customer events.
Define the event contract
Describe the event type, required fields, identifier, source, expected recipient and response. Verify signatures using the provider's documented method and handle secrets only on the server. Do not treat a publicly reachable endpoint as trusted input or put credentials into front-end code.
Design for repeated delivery
- Validate the request before acting.
- Store a durable event identifier and processing state.
- Make the business action idempotent: repeating the event must not create a duplicate order, email or subscription.
- Handle ordering and dependencies explicitly when one event can arrive before another.
- Use bounded retries and a review queue for persistent failures.
- Return and display success only for the stage actually completed.
Test the unpleasant cases
Use synthetic records and a test destination. Replay the same event twice, provide a bad signature, simulate a timeout after storage and interrupt the downstream service. Verify the final database state as well as the response. For email flows, distinguish a queued message, a provider acceptance and delivery to a mailbox.
Where should a person remain in control?
Require explicit approval where the workflow spends money, creates access or publishes claims. A newsletter confirmation must follow the user's genuine confirmation action, not a background link preview or a model's assumption. Avoid logging tokens, passwords or full personal payloads simply to make debugging easier.
What should operations see?
Show counts of accepted, duplicate, failed and pending events, with safe identifiers and a documented recovery action. Test restoring the necessary data and rotate credentials through a controlled process. These checks support the agentic marketing architecture and belong in the software acceptance brief, not only in an engineer's private notes.
