Google Trends: terms, topics and regions explained
Compare Google Trends results only after deciding whether you need specific wording or a broader concept. Search terms and topics answer different questions. Language, category, geography and search type can change what a chart represents.
When should I choose a search term?
Use a term when the wording matters, for example comparing the actual Bulgarian phrases customers use in enquiries. Google documents how unquoted words and quoted phrases are matched. Write the exact entry in your notes; a phrase, a translated phrase and a selected topic are not interchangeable research units.
When should I choose a topic?
A topic groups a concept across related terms and languages. It can help investigate a broader subject, but may hide the wording differences a copywriter needs. Use the topic to explore the concept and separate term comparisons to decide what a local service page should explain. Verify that the suggested topic is actually the intended subject.
Set up a fair regional comparison
- Choose the business question: language used, relative interest or campaign service area.
- Hold the time range, category and search type consistent.
- Compare like with like and label any deliberate term-versus-topic comparison.
- Inspect related searches to catch ambiguous meanings.
- Record missing or sparse regions as a data limitation, not proof that nobody there needs the service.
What does a darker region mean?
Regional interest is normalized. A region with a higher relative score does not necessarily contain more potential customers than a larger region with a lower score. Check population, delivery reach and actual enquiries separately before allocating budget. For a Sofia-only service, national curiosity is not automatically addressable demand.
What should the final note say?
Include the query type, exact wording, selected filters, observation and uncertainty. Then make a narrow next decision: a translation to test, an FAQ to answer or a market to investigate. Connect this to the research workflow rather than treating one map as a market-size estimate.
