How do you use Google and Meta ad libraries for competitor research?
Public ad libraries help you observe what advertisers say and show. Use them to identify messages, offers, formats and landing-page approaches worth investigating. They are research inputs, not a list of proven winners. A long-running or repeated creative does not tell you its profit, customer quality or full advertising budget.
Which Google library do you need?
Google Ads, formerly called AdWords, is the advertising product. The public Ads Transparency Center provides information about advertisers and ads shown on Google services, including Search and YouTube. The Google Ads asset library is different: it organises creative materials inside an advertiser's account. Use the transparency tool for market observation and your account library for managing your own approved assets.
How to research in Meta Ad Library
Open Meta's official Ad Library, choose the relevant location and category, and search by advertiser or keyword. Inspect the fields actually available for that ad and market. Ordinary commercial ads are not a public profit-and-loss report; information and archive coverage vary by region and category. Record the observation date so a later change is not mistaken for a permanent strategy.
Build a comparison sheet instead of a swipe-and-copy folder
| Record | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Audience problem | What problem does the message name? |
| Promise and evidence | What claim is made, and is evidence visible? |
| Offer and action | What does the visitor receive or do next? |
| Format and destination | Does the landing page continue the same promise? |
| Our hypothesis | What original alternative can we test? |
Distinguish what you observed from what you inferred. “Three versions are visible today” is an observation. “This is their best-performing ad” requires performance data you normally do not have. Do not invent spend, conversion rates or targeting details.
Turn an observation into an original campaign
Suppose several competitors describe speed but none explains the customer's preparation. Your hypothesis could be that a clear preparation checklist attracts more suitable enquiries. Write original copy, create authorised visuals and build a landing page that explains the actual process. Do not copy competitors' logos, imagery, testimonials or distinctive creative expression. Respect each platform's access terms; use approved APIs where applicable rather than bypassing controls.
Connect the campaign to a measurable customer action
Choose one primary outcome and define what makes it valuable. For a B2B service, an accepted brief may matter more than a cheap form submission. Use a controlled test with a budget cap and a stopping rule, then compare quality as well as volume. The campaign and landing-page guide sets out a practical test plan. Public ad research is not evidence that our campaigns outperform competitors.
3D Open Website can connect the research brief, brand rules, campaign media and tailored landing pages in an agreed project. Ad account access, media spend and ongoing management require explicit scope; they are not automatically included with a website.
