How do I choose Google Ads keywords and exclusions?

Choose keywords from the problems and purchase decisions your offer serves. Then define what should not trigger the ad. Keyword planning is not a contest to collect the longest list; it is a way to keep the message, destination and customer intent aligned.

    Build an intent map

Create rows for a core service, a specific application, a comparison and a question that belongs in educational content. Attach a suitable page and a reason the business can answer. Keep brand and non-brand intentions distinguishable when that matters to reporting. Use customer wording, not only internal product terminology.

    Understand matching before choosing it

Google's broad, phrase and exact options differ in reach and meaning. Exact match is not a promise of identical characters only. Read the current match-type documentation and choose a strategy consistent with bidding, conversion quality and the review capacity of the account. Do not copy a generic setting from another business.

    Maintain exclusions carefully

    1. Review actual query evidence and identify unrelated intent.
    2. Add a negative only when you can explain what relevant traffic it might also remove.
    3. Use the appropriate negative match type; negative keywords do not behave exactly like positive matching.
    4. Review necessary variants, such as singular/plural or synonyms, using the current documentation.
    5. Keep a dated change log and recheck lead quality after adjustments.

    A useful exclusion example

A paid service may receive research or job-seeking queries. Do not automatically exclude every word resembling education: someone comparing a service can also ask how it works. Inspect the full query and page relevance. An exclusion made to reduce irrelevant spending can also remove future buyers if it is too broad.

    What should the report contain?

Show meaningful query groups, spend where available, verified actions and qualified outcomes. Explain sampling or missing rows instead of assuming a report lists every search. Link the changes to the campaign setup brief; keyword relevance cannot repair an inaccurate offer or a broken enquiry form.
